UPDATE: Michelin Pilot Sport 4 review
One thing is always certain each year here in England especially living by the south coast, yes you guessed right...it will rain. Our winters gets the usual foggy mornings and sometimes the fog hangs around all day. Well, Sunday 8th January 2017 started off in fog though cleared as the day went. A view from the driver's seat offered the best part of 2 car lengths of visibility on the mix of B-roads we use for all our road tests.
These are often narrow or single track roads, you need to have your wits about you for wildlife that may step out unexpectedly. On a dry clear morning, you get just about enough notice of a wildlife making its way freely on the road so the pace can be up to the speed limit as there is enough visual notification. On a wet foggy cold morning with 2 car lengths of visibility, the car needs to be on its A-game and so your level of concentration to be able to use the tools at your disposal effectively to avoid anything that may step out unexpectedly.
The key component of the car on these wet; cold; foggy; low visibility roads are undoubtedly the contact patch to the road surface - tyres. Knowing how much grip you have to be able to then drive safely at pace is key. When your tyres gives you good feedback, the whole car gives you confidence to steer and brake. When the view ahead is not so clear, you need tyres that gives you enough road surface information at these low - sub 10 °C temperature. Sure, that is not even close to the freezing temperature freezing however it certainly feels like sub zero with the biting wind.
There are tyres made specifically for these type of temperature and am not sure if the MPS4 falls in that category technically however let me just make this simple point...I will not complain if these were the only tyres I have to use all year round. These tyres simply work on less than ideal tarmac...wet; slippery; cold; low traction asphalt...nothing thus far has challenged them and I have near on 500 miles on our usual test roads.
I do not recall for a moment the MPSS that were on the car prior being this competent especially on low grip tarmac...very impressive, truly.
My test will continue throughout the winter regardless of the outside temperature or road surface condition. I want to have confidence that on wet track days in the summer that I have the right tyre for the job. So far, MPS4 is staying exactly where they are...I am extremely pleased with the real world road use. Braking; steering; ride comfort; traction on slippery asphalt have all been very good. It really is great when a product actually does what it is claimed and then some more.
Superb tyres, an absolute great find certainly for wet tarmac use in the real world on a cold morning here on the south coast of England.
Next update will be in early Spring after some track days. Our Distributor in the Middle East based in Dubai, Ahmad of XLR8, has just taken delivery of a set of MPS4 for use on his VW Golf MK7 R demo vehicle which is fitted with MSS Track Pack. I hope to share his feedback on our Social Media platforms over the coming weeks.
Thanks for reading, appreciate the support.
